Nordic Tales: The Snow Queen

Stitch & Story is a monthly listening-and-making series. Each session pairs a story with a simple stitch you can work on while you listen. Join live on Zoom or listen on your own time—no pressure to finish anything. Check the calendar for past and upcoming Stitch & Story sessions.

The Snow Queen by Hans Christian Anderson

February’s Stitch & Story explores Danish hygge through cozy knitting and winter listening. We’ll share The Snow Queen by Hans Christian Andersen alongside comforting stitches, featuring the Sophie Shawl by PetiteKnit as our hygge knit highlight.

In The Snow Queen, a splinter of enchanted ice lodges itself in a young boy’s heart, turning warmth into coldness and drawing him into the Snow Queen’s frozen world. His friend Gerda sets out to find him, traveling through winter landscapes and meeting strangers who offer help in small but meaningful ways. Her journey is long and often uncertain, guided not by magic or power, but by love, perseverance, and trust.

This is a story about how gentleness can endure even the coldest seasons — and how warmth, once carried, can be shared.

Stitch Focus

Hygge Knitting

Hygge knitting is about embracing comfort, presence, and ease. This month’s featured project, the Sophie Shawl, reflects those values beautifully through its simple garter stitch fabric and soft i-cord edging.

Paired with The Snow Queen, a winter fairy tale rooted in Denmark, February becomes a month of warmth, shelter, and steady progress — both in story and in stitches.

Sophie Scarf

Pattern Inspiration

If you want to stitch while you listen…

February’s hygge knitting highlight is the Sophie Scarf by PetiteKnit.

This pattern features:

  • Cushy garter stitch for easy, rhythmic knitting
  • A soft i-cord edge that adds structure without fuss
  • A shape that feels like a small blanket you can wear
  • It’s an ideal listening project — forgiving, soothing, and deeply cozy.

Yarn idea:

Try holding multiple strands together, such as two strands of fingering-weight sock yarn plus one strand of mohair, for a plush, cloud-like fabric.

Technique Spotlight

Hygge knitting isn’t about learning something new — it’s about choosing stitches that feel good in your hands.

This month’s focus:

  • Garter stitch for comfort and rhythm
  • I-cord edging for gentle structure
  • Projects that allow you to relax into repetition

Pick something familiar. Let the process be the pleasure.

Nordic Tales: Jack of Sjöholm and the Gan-Finn

Join us for Stitch & Story on Tuesday, January 6 at 6:15 PM (Central), a relaxed Zoom gathering where we listen to a Nordic folktale and stitch together from the comfort of our own spaces.
This month’s story, Jack of Sjöholm and the Gan-Finn, is a winter sea tale about survival, careful making, and the urge to rebuild what failed. We’ll pair the listening with Fisherman’s Rib, a slow, rhythmic stitch well suited to cozy, attentive making.
Bring any portable project, make a small swatch, or simply listen along. Cameras on or off — tea, blankets, and knitting encouraged.
