The Collared Pin Loom Neck Warmer is a simple yet elegant accessory that’s perfect for beginners. Made from just two 10.5” woven squares, this cozy neck warmer features an open end that creates a flattering collar effect. You can also put the opening on the bottom for more of a scarfy look. The soft texture and warmth of double-stranded sport weight yarn (or 1 strand of chunky yarn) make it ideal for chilly days, and it’s quick enough to finish in an afternoon!
Materials Needed:
- Pin loom: 12” x 12” square size with 32 pegs (1 cm apart) on each side. I purchased mine on Amazon.
IMPORTANT: be sure that the loom has an EVEN NUMBER of pins on each side. If you have an odd number the weaving won’t properly alternate at the end…. - Yarn: Chunky or bulky yarn, or two strands of worsted or sportweight yarn.
- Note: For the first pin loom neck warmer I used 100% Peruvian Highland wool from Vidalana, doubled for thickness.
- For the final version I used Loops & Threads “Charisma” in Arctic, and then made a second with used 2 colors.
- Tapestry needle
- Scissors
Pin Loom Neck Warmer Instructions:
Step 1: Weave Two Squares
- Using your 12” pin loom, weave two squares (on the diagonal) with the yarn held double. This creates a thicker, more structured fabric that’s perfect for a neck warmer. Need to know how to pin loom? This is the video that helped me:
- Once finished, gently block the squares if needed to even out the weave.
Step 2: Sew the Squares Together
- Place the two squares right sides together, aligning their edges.
- Use a whip stitch or mattress stitch to sew along two adjacent sides. This will form an L-shape with one short edge left open.
- Knot your yarn securely and weave in the ends.
Step 3: Turn and Shape the Collar
- Turn the piece right side out so the seams are hidden inside.
- The open edge will act like a collar, naturally folding outward for a stylish, cozy look.
Step 4: Adjust Fit and Finishing
- Try on the neck warmer and adjust the collar fold to your liking.
- Optionally, add decorative top-stitching along the edges for a polished finish.
Tips and Variations:
- Yarn Choices: Use variegated yarn for a colorful effect or solid yarn for a classic look. Bulky yarn can also be substituted.
- Add a Button: Sew a button or toggle near the collar opening to keep it closed on extra chilly days.
- Customize the Fit: For a looser fit, weave slightly larger squares or use a more relaxed tension.
Care Instructions:
- Hand wash in cool water with a gentle wool detergent.
- Lay flat to dry to maintain the shape and structure.
