Gentle, Refreshing, and Budget-Friendly!
If you’ve ever glanced at the price of a body wash lately (cough 40 cents an ounce for Dove Relax Body Wash!), you know that the cost of simple self-care products is creeping higher and higher. Inspired by a simple DIY I found (this video), I decided to make my own — using ingredients I already had at home!
Not only is this DIY incredibly easy, but the result is a gentle, moisturizing face and body wash that’s perfect for your daily routine.
My DIY Face & Body Wash Recipe
Makes 12 ounces
Ingredients:
- 1 cup Dr. Natural Lavender Castile Soap (body wash and face wash)
- 1/2 cup Filtered Water (or Distilled Water)
- 2 tablespoons Castor Oil
- 1 teaspoon Almond Oil (you can substitute Coconut Oil if you prefer)
- 10 drops Eucalyptus Essential Oil (optional)
- A few extra drops of Lavender Essential Oil (optional, to boost the lavender scent)
Supplies:
- Recycled 12-ounce soap pump bottle
- Funnel (optional, but helpful!)
Instructions:
- Add the Castile soap to a large measuring cup for mixing and pouring.
- Add the filtered water.
- Stir in the castor oil and almond oil.
- Add your essential oils, adjusting to your scent preference.
- Mix gently to combine. (Avoid vigorous shaking to minimize bubbles.)
- Pour into pump bottle.
How I Use It:
- Face: Every night, I soak a hot washcloth in a basin with a few pumps of this wash mixed into the water, then gently cleanse my face. (After that I moisturize with my favorite blend of jojoba oil and and essential oils like frankincense and lavender.)
- Body: In the shower, a couple pumps lather beautifully for a fresh, calming cleanse.
The combination of Castile soap and nourishing oils makes this wash gentle, non-drying, and suitable for most skin types.
Cost Breakdown:
Here’s a rough cost estimate, based on average ingredient prices:
- Dr. Natural Castile Soap (32 oz bottle ~$10) = $0.31/oz → 8 oz used = $2.48
- Castor Oil (16 oz bottle ~$8) = $0.50/oz → 2 tbsp (~1 oz) = $0.50
- Almond Oil (16 oz bottle ~$10) = $0.63/oz → 1 tsp (~0.17 oz) = ~$0.11
- Essential Oils (very small amount used, estimated ~$0.20 worth)
- Filtered Water (minimal cost)
Total cost: ~$3.29 for 12 ounces
Cost per ounce: About 27 cents per ounce!
(That’s about 30% cheaper than the store brand I was buying!)
Why I Love It:
- Made with natural, gentle ingredients
- Customizable scent
- Super moisturizing
- Eco-friendly (recycled my old pump bottle)
- Saves money without sacrificing quality
Give it a try — your skin (and your wallet) will thank you!
Happy making! ✨
