Knitted Great Lengths Coat

Are you looking for a chunky comfortable, affordable sweater to knit? I was! I wanted something not too complicated that I would actually wear and adore for its softness and warmth… Well I am happy to say that the Great Lengths Coat pattern came to my rescue.

The Pattern

The Great Lengths Coat is a pattern in a book I’ve had for years called “Knits to Fit & Flatter“. There are a lot of really nice patterns in the book, all meant to fit and flatter obviously 🙂 I wanted to make something warm and soft to wear during the coming fall and winter months, and I wanted to use chunky yarn so it would take a long time to complete. I am 5’7” tall and I made the “small” size with a finished length of 30 3/4 (78cm). It fits a 34-36in chest.

The Yarn

I decided to go with a Bernat Softee Baby Chunky yarn in Cozy Gray. Why baby yarn? Well, I wasn’t sure how it would turn out or if I’d like it so I went with the least expensive. I bought 6 skeins at about $4 a piece, and didn’t use them all. In fact, I had enough leftover to make a little hat for myself.

The Gauge

I used size 10.5 (6.5mm) needles. 12sts and 18 rows to 4in (10cm) square.

The Buttons

The finishing touch for my baby soft sweater is a set of 6 mother of pearl buttons that I purchased on Etsy from @earthgatherings. I love LOVE these buttons! The set came with 8, so I have 2 leftover to use on another project. Check out her Etsy shop!

Here are the photos I took along the way:
