My Woolly Felted Roll-up Pencil Case

My Woolly Felted Roll-up Pencil Case

Looking for the perfect quick gift project—or a clever way to store your crochet hooks? Let me introduce you to the Felted Roll-up Pencil Case, a free pattern from Lion Brand that just got a wooly glow-up with Cascade 220. Knitting every row (garter stitch) makes it totally beginner-friendly.

I used the color Provence (2425), a rustic terracotta red with earthy charm, and I love how the felting process brought out unexpected undertones—like flashes of gold that shimmer when wrapped with the twisted cord.

Materials + Mods

  • Yarn: Cascade 220 in Provence (1 skein!)
  • Pattern: Felted Roll-Up Pencil Case (Free)
  • Cord: Made with leftover scraps using a simple twisted cord technique
  • Needle Felting Tool: Used to hide ends, shape details, and embellish edges

Felting Tips

Felting in a high-efficiency washer can be a little trial-and-error. My first short wash didn’t cut it. For round two, I threw in:

  • a hot water heavy duty cycle
  • a pair of jeans
  • my dog’s rubber ball (for agitation!)

It worked beautifully! Once dry, the fabric was dense but flexible, and the stitches vanished into a fuzzy texture that makes the color glow.

Customization Ideas

This pattern is ripe for experimenting:

  • Use a contrasting color for the pocket section
  • Add needle-felted embellishments (initials, hook sizes, flowers, whatever sparks joy!)
  • Try multi-color felting for a variegated surprise

With 8 slots, it’s perfect for crochet hooks, DPNs, pens, makeup brushes, or whatever your creative heart desires.

Gifting Potential

Need a teacher gift? Something for a crafty friend? This project is fast, useful, and heartfelt. One skein of Cascade 220 goes a long way—and the result looks boutique-worthy. It’s never too early to start planning for holiday gifting.

Get Your Wool

You can find Cascade 220 right here at The Yarny Way in Provence and dozens of other shades. Come see what colors call to you—and don’t be afraid to felt a few!

Use What You Have!

This project is perfect for stash-busting—just make sure your yarn is 100% wool and not superwash so it will felt properly. Cascade 220 is a go-to, but any non-superwash wool in worsted weight should do the trick. Time to raid your stash and give those single skeins a new purpose!

I hope this inspires you to knit with wool all year round. Felting is magical—give it a whirl and roll with it!
