A Little Hook History
Ever wonder why U.S. crochet hook sizes are marked with seemingly random letters and numbers? It’s a system that dates back to early 20th-century manufacturers, who each used their own sizing conventions. To standardize things (somewhat), letter codes were introduced—starting with “A” for the smallest hooks and increasing alphabetically with the size. But not all sizes exist (there’s no J9 or K11, for example), and some numbers were added in along the way to bridge metric gaps.
That’s why you might see a hook labeled both US H/8 (5.0mm)—a blend of tradition, adaptation, and a little crochet chaos. These days, most hooks are labeled in both millimeters and U.S. sizing to help crafters navigate the quirks of hook history!
