Nordic Tales: Jack of Sjöholm and the Gan-Finn

Stitch & Story is a monthly listening-and-making series. Each session pairs a story with a simple stitch you can work on while you listen. Join live on Zoom or listen on your own time—no pressure to finish anything. Check the calendar for past and upcoming Stitch & Story sessions.

Jack of Sjöholm and the Gan-Finn

Join us for Stitch & Story on Tuesday, January 6 at 6:15 PM (Central), a relaxed Zoom gathering where we listen to a Nordic folktale and stitch together from the comfort of our own spaces. This month’s story, Jack of Sjöholm and the Gan-Finn, is a winter sea tale about survival, careful making, and the urge to rebuild what failed. We’ll pair the listening with Fisherman’s Rib, a slow, rhythmic stitch well suited to cozy, attentive making. Bring any portable project, make a small swatch, or simply listen along. Cameras on or off — tea, blankets, and knitting encouraged.

This story begins with survival. Jack lives through something brutal and comes home with one clear thought: there has to be a better way to build this. He isn’t chasing recognition. He’s thinking about what comes next — the next storm, the next winter, the next crew. January is a good month for that energy. It’s quieter. We start fresh. We slow down enough to build with care.

Reflection question:

Where in your making life do you want more steadiness this month?

Stitch Focus

Fisherman’s Rib
Alternate Names: Half Brioche · Halbpatent

Fisherman’s Rib creates a thick, deeply textured fabric with excellent warmth and stretch. It looks intricate but is built from simple, repeated actions, making it ideal for winter projects and slow, steady stitching.

This stitch reinforces what’s already there, building each row from the one beneath it — a perfect match for a story about rebuilding from experience and making things that hold.

Fisherman’s Rib / Halbpatent doesn’t have a single documented place of origin, but it’s a long-established European ribbing structure closely associated with cold-weather, working garments. Its widespread use across Germanic and Nordic regions reflects shared needs rather than a single source.
