The Yarny Way Top: A Free Pin Loom Pattern

The Yarny Way Top Pin Loom Pattern

Looking for a cozy, handmade top with a touch of woven elegance? Similar to the large granny square tops that have been trending on social media, #theyarnywaytop pin loom pattern uses soft, bulky-weight yarn and 10.5-inch squares woven on a 12-inch pin loom to create a beautiful, color-blocked garment. Whether you’re an experienced weaver or just getting started, this project is a great way to showcase your skills and enjoy the creative process. Feel free to use my free pin loom pattern here or your own color combinations!

Time: It took me less than 30 minutes to weave each square, so 6 hours of weaving time, and about 2 hours to stitch it all together. 😀

Materials Needed

One size: Finished measurements – Body 42″ circumference. Sleeves 21″ circumference

Weaving Instructions

For each square, use the following color pattern:

  1. Dark “Olive” Green: Wrap 13 pins.
  2. Light “Sage” Green: Wrap the next 6 pins.
  3. White “Snow”: Wrap 6 pins.
  4. Dark “Olive” Green: Wrap the final 7 pins.

This color arrangement gives each square a unique, gradient-style look. Once you weave four squares and place them together, the combined effect creates a striking, cohesive design.

Layout for the Top

For a top with sleeves, you will need 12 squares:

  • Back: Arrange 4 squares in a 2×2 grid.
  • Front: Arrange 4 squares in a 2×2 grid.
  • Sleeves: Use 2 squares for each sleeve.
Assembly Instructions

Joining Squares:

  1. Lay the squares out in your chosen arrangement.
  2. Use a flat crochet join (e.g., single crochet or slip stitch) to connect the edges of the squares. Match the pin loops for an even join.
  3. For a decorative look, you could use chain stitches (e.g., chain 3, slip stitch into the next pin) to create a lacy effect.

Seaming the Top:

  • Attach the front panel to the back panel along the shoulders, leaving a hole for the neck.
  • Seam the sides together, leaving openings for the arms.
  • Attach 1 square to each armhole for the sleeves. Fold each square in half and seam the edges to create a more fitted sleeve if desired.
Optional Finishing Touches

Crochet Edging:

  • Work a simple single crochet or double crochet border around the neckline, hem, and sleeve openings.
  • Add a decorative stitch, such as picots or scallops, for extra flair.

Optional Embellishments:

  • Add fringe or tassels along the hem for a boho-inspired look.
  • Use buttons or ties at the neckline for an adjustable fit.
Tips and Tricks
  • Yarn Choice: Yarn Bee Tender Touch is incredibly soft and has a slight sheen that enhances the overall look. Its bulky weight provides warmth and structure while maintaining a lovely drape. But by no means do you have to use this yarn. ANY Weight “5” Bulky weight yarn will do.
  • Care: Hand wash and lay flat to dry to maintain the softness and shape of your top.
  • Budget-Friendly: Each skein was only $3.50, making this project affordable and luxurious!
