A while back, I created a simple knitting pattern for a simple pair of fingerless gloves using sock yarn—no thumb gusset, just a straightforward knit to keep my hands warm while I crafted away. They were cozy, functional, and oh-so-satisfying to make. But as the seasons change and my creative spirit evolves, I’ve found myself drawn to a new project that’s just as warm but a little more textured and unique.
Enter: 16 perfect little 4” squares, lovingly woven on my Zoom Loom from sport-weight merino wool. These squares are like tiny pieces of art, begging to be turned into something special. Inspired by my earlier gloves and a desire to give my hands (and wrists!) an extra dose of warmth, I decided to transform these into “Zoom Loom Funky Fingerless Gloves.”
The plan? Use 4 squares per hand, stacked vertically to create a beautiful length that wraps snugly from knuckles to mid-forearm. Each square brings its own charm to the design, creating a patchwork of warmth and softness.
Watch me make a Zoom Loom Square in this timelapse video:

What I used:
- 8 squares (4 per hand) made from a Schacht Zoom Loom
- Tapestry needle
- Matching yarn or leftover merino wool
- Scissors
The Assembly
1. The Layout Plan.
I first stacked 4 squares vertically for each hand, decided which color variations would go where on the tops of my hands and my palm sides. I then tested the length by wrapping the stack around my arm to ensure it reached from my knuckles to mid-forearm.
2. Joining the Squares
I chose to use a whip stitch to connect the squares in the middle of my hands.
3. Shape Into a Tube
Fold the strip lengthwise, with the right sides facing out. I used a crochet slip stitch to seam the long side edges, to form a tube, leaving a thumb hole open about 1″–1.5″ from the top (or adjust to fit your thumb comfortably).
4. Thumb Opening.
I went around the opening with a crochet slip stitch and then did 2 rows of half double crochets to extend the glove over the base of my thumbs.
5. Optional Embellishments
I chose to leave the glove in this state, but depending on your inclination and yarn you are working with you could of course do more. Some ideas:
- Wrist and Finger Edging:
Add a decorative or functional border around the wrist and finger openings. Options include:
A few rows of single crochet for a tidy finish.
A picot edge for a touch of whimsy.
- Ribbing for stretch and snugness.
- Sew buttons or beads at the wrist for a stylish touch.
- Add embroidery, like a vine or starburst, on the back of the hand for flair.
- Consider needle felting a motif or monogram on the gloves.
Tips for Success

Blocking: If your squares aren’t perfectly even, block them before assembly to smooth things out.
Fit Check: Continuously test the fit while seaming to ensure it’s comfy and snug, not too tight or loose.
I love the way these artisan-style funky fingerless gloves turned out.
What colors or embellishments are you imagining for your funky fingerless gloves?
