Crocheted Beanie

Crocheted Beanie

A simple crocheted beanie perfect for a chemo patient because I used a really soft cotton, but it’s cute for anyone too!

crocheted beanie pattern
Aren’t we cute?

Fits adults & teens
Crochet hook size H
Yarn I used: Sensations Boardwalk Cotton which I found on clearance at Joann Fabrics. From what I can tell it’s been discontinued 🙁 That being said here is the info about the yarn so you can find a substitution:

Instructions

  • Ch 3, work 7 hdc in first st. Join (8 hdc)
  • Ch 2, hdc in same stitch. 2 hdc in each. Join. (16 hdc)
  • Ch 2, hdc in same stitch, hdc in next. *2 hdc in next, 1 hdc in next* . Repeat from * to * around. Join. (24 hdc)
  • Ch 2, hdc in same stitch, hdc in next 2 sts. *2 hdc in next, hdc in next 2 sts* . Repeat from * to * around. Join (32 hdc)
  • Ch 2, hdc in same stitch, hdc in next 3 sts, *2 hdc in next, hdc in next 3 sts* . Repeat from * to * around. Join (40 hdc)
  • Ch 2, hdc in same stitch, hdc in next 4 sts, *2 hdc in next, hdc in next 4 sts* . Repeat from * to * around. Join (48 hdc)
  • Ch 2, hdc in next and each st around. Join. (48hdc)
  • Repeat until out of yarn, or until hat is desired length. Fasten off.

Tip for beginners:

hdc = half double crochet
in same stitch = this is how you increase stitches across your work. It is explained in this video from CrochetCabana.com: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bzaq_jWev90. Although she is demonstrating with dc stitches (double crochet), the technique is the same for this project using hdc (half double crochet).

I am pretty sure I used a size H crochet hook. I can’t believe I forgot to mention that part! Thanks for your comment!

          Hi Sheridan,
The yarn is very unique! It’s a cotton/rayon blend that I found on clearance at Joann Fabrics. Here is a link to the yarn on Ravelry and it looks like it’s discontinued 🙁 but perhaps you can find a subsitute: http://www.ravelry.com/yarns/library/jo-ann-sensations-boardwalk-cotton
          Good luck!

yea, I looked it up and I was super bummed that they discontinued that yarn. Any suggestions for a substitution? And how many yards of yarn should I get? I’m so sorry for these questions…I’m still a little new to crocheting

Since you asked I got the news that a friend of mine was just diagnosed with breast cancer so I am going to crochet a new beanie or two or three for her and am going to use a yarn that is widely accessible so that you can follow along. Being able to make something with love is such a gift! Good for you to start crocheting :)) stay tuned for the yarn details

Oops! That’s a typo. It should say hdc for half double crochet. 🙂

I like his hat very much. I’m not accomplished at crochet, so could you please explain what “in same” means? Thank you.

Hi Pam! Thank you for your comment. I have actually updated the pattern to better explain that part for beginners like you.

I am with the lady who asked what hook size did you use…. The pattern says a “J” hook and you say an “H”. There is also mentioned a size US 9 needle. This is getting very confusing, I want to make this for a dear friend but…… HELP!

Sorry for the confusion, I had simply copied and pasted the information about the yarn, which had a gauge for crocheters and knitters based on the J hook and US 9 needle. I have removed the info altogether so as not to confuse more people. I used an H hook. Hope that helps! Happy crocheting!

Dear Marni, a friend of mine has just been diagnosed with breast cancer and has started chemo. I would like to crochet this hat for her. However, I am a bit stuck with increases after your last increase. How often would you increase after the 48 hdc’s to reach a bigger section at the top? Thanks.

Hi Marguerite – so sweet of your to make this beanie for your friend. If you need it to be bigger I was just add one round of increases after the last one = so you should end up with 56 stitches like so:

Ch 2, hdc in same stitch, hdc in next 5 sts, *2 hdc in next, hdc in next 5 sts* . Repeat from * to * around. Join (56 hdc)

Let me know if it works out!

You can use cotton yarn too. I would use lily sugar and cream cotton yard available at Walmart.

I am following this pattern in every single instruction and the numbers arE not adding up after the first three rows, No maTter how i do it. Its SupEr frustrating because if i follow the pattern it shows That im either one number of stitch too high or too low. Wont be recommending and wont be sharing it with otherS.
