I originally published my mbm Hat Cowl knitting pattern in 2017 as a versatile piece that could be worn as either a cozy cowl or a cinched hat. Over the years, it has remained one of my favorite quick and giftable projects. Recently, I decided it was time to revisit this design and give it a little refresh.
Enter King Cole Firefly Aran.
I knit this new sample using one skein of Firefly in the color Dragonfly, and I couldn’t be happier with the result. The subtle shifts of black, charcoal, and blue create a beautiful fabric with a touch of shimmer that reminds me of a night sky.
The Firefly Edition also includes a few updates:
✨ One skein of King Cole Firefly Aran (100g / 219 yards)
✨ One needle size only: US Size 8 (5 mm) 16″ circular needles
✨ Optional i-cord drawstrings with cord stops for a polished finish
✨ Refreshed instructions and updated formatting
The knitting pattern itself remains true to the original design. Decorative eyelets create the openings for the drawstrings, and the finished piece can still be worn as either a hat or a cowl. It’s a fun, approachable project for adventurous beginners and an enjoyable, relaxing knit for more experienced makers.
I especially love that this project has become even simpler over the years. The Firefly Edition can be knit using a single 16-inch circular needle, making it an easy project to toss into your project bag for travel or an afternoon of knitting.
The updated pattern is available as a free PDF download and has also been refreshed on Ravelry for those who have already added it to their libraries.
✨

If you cast one on, I’d love to see your version. Whether you choose Firefly or another favorite yarn from your stash, I hope this little pattern brings you as much joy today as it did when I first designed it nearly a decade ago.
Warm stitches and kind vibes,
Marni
