The Love Shrug Knitting Pattern

Love Shrug Knitting Pattern with Heart Motif

Expanding upon the Simple Knit Shrug, I designed a new knitting pattern called The Love Shrug that will have you wearing your heart on your sleeve! I incorporate a really cool and easier-than-you-think heart motif from one end to the other. The shrug is knitted with 100% washable merino wool Swish DK from KnitPicks, but you could use any DK or worsted weight yarn. Just be sure to check your gauge first and make any adjustments as needed.

Materials:

The pattern instructions are for S, M, or L. Keep in mind it’s not a snug shrug. I’m actually wearing the Medium size. I love that the sleeves are extra long and loose. It’s perfect for wearing over a t-shirt and so super soft and warm.

I hope you’ll give it a try!

Once you have the Love Shrug pattern, you can use this tutorial to help you through the Heart Motif 🙂

I am a long time knitter, but found the written instructions unclear. I was going to cast this pattern aside, but, fortunately came upon your video which cleared up every single question I had!! Thank you so very much for making this video with
an excellent demonstration of how each row is knit.

Hi Janet! I learn best by watching too – so I’m glad the video was helpful to you. I can’t wait to see how your Love Shrug turns out! 🙂 Marni

There are differences between the written instructions for the heart patterns and the graph you made. For example, Row 2’s written instructions call for the 6th stitch to be P2togbl, but the graph calls for P2tog. That’s confusing. So I made my own graph.

And I’m a total beginner, so this pattern might be a little much for me, but that 6th and 7th row are almost impossible for me to do within the gauge the pattern calls for– it’s like I don’t have as much yarn available as I need. Any suggestions for that?

      Hi Tracy!
Actually my chart is correct. The chart is worked starting with the 1st row (right side) from right to left. The second row (wrong side) reads from left to right on the chart. All odd rows you are reading the chart from right to left, even rows are left to right. Check my video to follow along https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fOZVe_c9YoY&t=8s
I’m not sure what you are saying about the 6th and 7th row though. Can you explain more? Thanks@

I’ve watched the video at least 5 times, which is how I knew that Row 2 was off. Double check Row 5 as well, those written instructions don’t match the graph or the video.

I didn’t have enough yard to knit the sixth row because my 5th row YOs were in the wrong spot. Just figured that out. Thanks!

Thanks for sharing this nice pattern. I was wondering on how much more skeins would be needed if you wanted the shrug to be more of a cacoon shrug to wear with jeans instead of as shown. A friend bought me the required 6 skeins but I would like it a bit longer. Help! Thanks again for providing the tutorial.

Hi there, The Love Shrug pattern is specifically designed for a top half shrug, and so it won’t work as a longer cacoon style shrug. To create a piece like that involves knitting a very long rectangle and sewing up side seems rather than arm seams. You have me thinking though that I could come up with an easy pattern for this – but not with the heart motifs… perhaps a big cable down the back. Hmmmmmm. 🙂

That’s a beautiful shrug. I just finished one myself that looks a bit like this one – thought it out myself. I also used hearts in the middle, but cabled ones.

CONFUSING…PLEASE EXPLAIN/SHOW: INCREASE 1ST AND 5TH ROWS OF PATTERN. iSN’T THE WHOLE PATTERN JUST A REPEAT OF THE 8 ROWS OF HEART MOTIF? SIMPLE SHRUG WAS EASY BUT MAYBE I WAS A BIT TOO AMBITIOUS FOR THIS ONE:((

Hi Karen! I’m sorry this is more challenging for you, don’t give up! When I say increase 1st and 5th rows of the pattern, that means the first and fifth row of the 8-row repeat, you would make a stitch on either end. So you would increase by 2 stitches. I actually found it easier to keep track of my increases and decreases by using the hearts to keep track. Please let me know if you have any other questions!

Thanks Marni, I’m relatively new to knitting (3 years), so I’m new at reading patterns. Kinda thought I was on the right path but wanted to confirm. Hope mine turns out as lovely as yours! Cheers!
